There are two ways to mig weld, one is using solid wire and gas(I forgot
the name of the gas, I think its inert though...) and the other is using
a mig welder with flux core wire. Flux core wire is more expensive, but
the welding rig(without gas and regulator) is cheaper. Solid core wire
(with  gas) turns out much nicer, smoother, less splatter and slag comes
off easily.

I use a 110 volt wire feed welder and it works fine for me. I paid 188.00
for it brand new from sam's wholesale. i have never had a ring break. It did
take me a while to learn how to use it so I would not have to grind so much.

Add 3 - 5 inches to the circumference of the drum shell and divide by pi
(3.14159265358979).  3- 5 depends on 1) the thickness of the hide you are using,
2) whether hair on or hair off, & 3) size of rope you are using.
