Seydou Coulibaly is uniquely qualified to teach and demonstrate West
African dance and culture. Unlike many Africans who emigrate to the United
States today, Coulibaly was educated according to ancient tradition:
Coulibaly received his education from village elders, traditional rituals,
initiations into secret societies, and master dance teachers in the Segu
region of Mali. As a result of his studies, all of Coulibaly's work is
thoroughly researched and heavily steeped in folkloric tradition.
Seydou is available to teach workshops and
master classes throughout
the country. Whenever he teaches a class, he brings a djembe player to teach
a drum (djembe) class as well. He has also reestablished Troupe Komme Djosse
in America, having originally founded the performance group in Mali. Komme
Djosse performs throughout the United States in the genres of dance,
drumming, traditional music, and contemporary music which draws on Malian
traditions.

GIFT OF RHYTHM AFRICAN DANCE STUDIO
Teachers Country of origin: USA
STYLE OF DANCE: West African Dance and Drumming
Description of Dance Classes: Beginners - Advance for ages 5-adults. Teach the
Basic meaning of the traditional dances and songs with live drumming. I teach
the dances in a simply way so each student, whether beginners or advance can
learn. I teach dancers to listen to the beat of the drums, letting it connect
with their spirits so that they can feel the music and express it through the
art form of movement.
Class Schedule & Fees: Every Tuesday @ 7:00-8:00; $9.00 per class and $5.00 per
class for disadvantage children and adults. My goal and desire is to reach out
to families with children who are considered high-risk, poverty, level and
disadvantage. I want to make my classes affordable so that these children and
adults can have the same opportunity as families of middle and upper class
families who experience the beautiful artform of West African dance and its'
rich culture.
Resumé of teacher: DELLA WESTERFIELD, OWNER AND ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Born and raised in Denver, Colorado Della Westerfield, mother of four first
took modern dance at age twelve; she began her African dance career later in
life. She relocated to Augusta Georgia and began studying West African dance
under the Acclaimed Artistic Director Sala Adenike of Body and Soul African
Dance Studio. Less than eight months later, Della was chosen to perform with
the company, the Abatsu Dance Troupe, which performs throughout Georgia and the
CSRA (Central Savannah River Area) as well as in South Carolina. A member of
the company for four years Della also assisted the Director in dance workshops.
In the summer of 2001, Della relocated to Federal Way, Washington where she
founded Gift of Rhythm African Dance. She has taught African dance to children
and adults for the City of Federal Way Parks and Recreation and for the Federal
Way School Districts' three elementary schools' after school and summer school
program called Successful kids. She has also taught students at the Southeast
Youth and Family Services in Seattle. She's taught dance classes for Just Dance
Company,
located in Federal Way, Washington. Della's goal is to build her own dance
studio, GIFT OF RHYTHM AFRICAN DANCE as a strong pillar in the community for
disadvantage children.
Her desire is to guide students into the art form of African Dance, thru
steps and movement. To teach them self-awareness, self esteem, accomplishment
and self-expression. Della's ultimate goal is to establish an African Dance
Studio in Federal Way, Washington, Colorado, or Georgia for under privileged and
high-risk children.
Della's goal is to continue to educate herself in the art of African dance
and choreography, in order to be fully equipped to instruct her students. She
currently trains at Spectrum Dance Studio in Seattle Washington. She believes
that her talent and dream of dancing is truly a gift from God and her greatest
influence and mentor is Director Sala Adenike who told her, "To be and excellent
teacher you must be a student for life."

Teachers Country of Origin and Village: Ghana - Tamale
STYLE OF DANCE: Traditional Ghanaian
Description of Dance Classes:
Sweat, Smile, and Celebrate!!! Fun and energetic classes with live drumming
focus on traditional Ghanaian and other West African dances. The earth and heart
based movements are exciting and varied, yet appropriate for all levels.
African dance teaches the body a new vocabulary of movements and rhythms that
classical Western styles of dance do not. Because of this it is a great
"cross-training" opportunity for dancers of other styles. Lively fun for all,
dancer or not, everyone takes something new away!
Awal Alhassan has been teaching everyone from complete beginners to professional
dancers for over twenty years, and is able to lay out each movement so that
every student leaves class amazed at how much fun they had and what they have
accomplished.
Resumé of teacher:
Awal Alhassan was born and raised by a drumming and dancing family in Tamale,
Ghana. He has performed with the National Theatre of Ghana, and The Center for
National Culture Dance Troupe for years in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo,
Benin, and other African countries. He has also performed with the Odaye Dance
and Drum Center group in Accra, and at home leads the Zosimili after school
dance program for youth. He has been teaching drumming and dancing since the age
of seven, including a stint at the University of Legon, Ghana. In addition to
leading Sohoyini, since his recent arrival to Seattle, he has performed with
Gansango, Soyaya, Maya Soleil, Ocheami, Sarakasi, and Okropong and teaches
regularly.

Resumé of teacher:
Rosa Maria has been bewitched by and fallen under a spell of dance since her
early childhood. As a primarily African dancer she remains faithful to her
roots, but besides she has also familiarized herself with dance styles from
other cultures, like oriental dance and Brazilian samba. Rosa can pride herself
on a successful international career. Besides
a performing artist, she is also a qualified dance teacher with an enormous
inspiration, who can pass on to her pupils the benevolent harmony between body
and mind, that dance brings about.
