Come learn traditional music of the Malinke people of Guinea, West Africa!!! Open to all, $10/ea, just show up!!! This class will run each Saturday from April 24th until May 15th. After this introductory month, I will take a one week break, and we will resume with a six-week series on May 29th. I am also offering new six week sessions at my house. Pre-registration required. Wednesdays: 6:30-8PM Beginning/intermediate Malinke music 8:15-10PM Hand drum soloing and improvisation First session of six weeks begins May 5th. Sundays: 1-2:30PM Hand drum soloing and improvisation 3-4:30PM Beginning/intermediate Malinke music This session begins this Sunday, May 2nd. Only a couple of spots per class left, so reserve ASAP. See above for Malinke music class details.The solo/improvisation class is a special class offered to intermediate hand drummers. This class will teach fundamentals of playing lead drum, soloing and improvising. We will spend lots of time each week working on technique, sound, and clarity, with each of us getting a time to improvise in class and share ideas about shaping and building solos. Step out of playing your crutch phrases over and over, and start telling stories with your instrument! Please have a strong understanding of tones and slaps. Some knowledge of "playing out of the roll" handing systems is definitely helpful, but we will discuss this in great detail. Class size for the Wednesday and Sunday classes are very limited (6 per class). Cost is $60 for the six week session. Reply to me directly to reserve your space and receive directions. Bio:

the MALIDOMA World Drum & Dance Studio, 408 West Third Avenue, Spokane

Drumming Level 1:
This
weekly class is perfect for the novice
who is interested in learning to drum well, from the beginning, as well
as experienced drummers who are new to Traditional West African music
and are seeking to expand their repertoire. We will explore this
powerful style, playing traditional rhythms on African drums. The
history and traditional usage of each rhythm presented is also covered,
and is an integral part of our studies.
West African Drumming Level 2: This eight week class continues the course of study begun in the Level One classes, and proceeds with the introduction of more sophisticated drumming material, such as involved breaks, songs, and beginning solo and improvisation techniques. West African Drumming Level 3: The Level Three class continues the course of study begun in the previous two levels, and introduces students to dunun playing, advanced soloing techniques, and sophisticated choreographies.
