We teach numerous workshops for adults and children throughout the DC metro
area at different places.  We offer adult dance classes
from the Kankouran Studio in Washington, DC. These classes are typically
held on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
Group dance classes are $10/hour,
Private dance $35/hour,
Traditional dancing and singing from Ghana, West Africa.

Dr. Brown is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Sankofa Dance Theater at Virginia State University (formerly Orchesis) in the HPER Department. She teaches modern dance, folkloric dance, rhythmic forms, dance composition, and aerobic dance.

She is a master dance instructor and noted choreographer (she received a choreographer's fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts). Dr. Brown also received the prestigious Future Faculty Fellowship as well as the Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the Graduate School at Temple University where she completed her studies for the degrees of M.Ed. in Dance and an Ed.D. in Dance. She also holds a B.A. in Radio, Television and Film from Temple University. Her dissertation is entitled: Boppin' at Miss Mattie's Place: African American Grassroots Dance Culture in North Philadelphia during the 1960's.

Style of Dance: Guinean/Malian/Gambian
Description of Dance Classes: Classes begin with a 30minute warm up and proceed with a 30 minute African dance portion.  The origin of the dances, as well as the meanings and original gender the dance was done by is explained before each class.  All classes are done to live drumming, and traditional breaks for each dance/rhythm are explained.  Participants, if they choose, are invited to dance in a performance once they are able to articulate the steps properly. Company auditions are held periodically and are open to students as well as the public.

              Thurs.: 7:30pm-8:30pm African dance (adult) & 6:30-7:30pm drum class (children & adult)
               Tues.:6:30-7:00pm tiny tot African dance & 6:30-7:30pm children's african dance &
