Class
held every Wednesday from 7:30 till 9:30 At Hammersmith Emerald Centre
II, right next to Hammersmith tube station(metropolitan line),
Class is £7.50 for the two hours. drum hire available.
style of drum:
Djembe, Doun-Doun, and Gongoma
Description of class:
Well I have been attending Lu's class for just over a year or so now and
having studied under other drum teachers, i can honestly say that Lu is
an excellent bridge between -the western school of thought in concept of
music, and- the spirit and truth of African music.
1)The class begins
with warm up of whatever rhythms one feels and hears in the collective
sound,.(for new comers, the basics of drum handling and playing is
explained)
2) A set of
accompaniments are taught.-this is then played collectively in a rota
whilst advanced members of the group playes solo parts on a rota.
Where appropriate,
the roots/background and also the 'feel' of the music is discussed
afterwards and any questions are answered at this point.
3)15 minute break
4)repeat of 2) with a
different set of accompaniments. and again Q&A.
5)most of the
beginners leave at this point (9:30) and the more advanced drummers
stays on for maybe an extra hour or so to play on and experiment -with
guidance from Lu.
15 years experience
with jembe, drum & gongoma maker, very experienced teacher.
